I have a steering rack that clatters over almost any bump. Annoying. I suspect the rack dampers need to be attended to or possibly the whole rack replaced. This is beyond the capabilities of my aged frame so I plan to take it to the local garage who is well versed in such things.
Assuming that he agrees with my diagnosis I would imagine that we will decide to replace the whole rack and and possibly the track rod ends at the same time.
Obviously I can find the cost of the parts easily enough but would want to have an idea of labour costs. How many hours do you think the job might take (including tracking)?

Re: Steering rack replacement costs
With all the parts ready to hand it should take a experienced Morris Minor mechanic no longer than 2 hrs including tracking.
Re: Steering rack replacement costs
Many thanks, I was thinking around 2-3 hours assuming all goes smoothly (ish).
I'll go round and have a chat. First I must make sure he agrees with my diagnosis, he should, he's been under the car before and knows it.
I wonder, was a list of repair times ever published?

BMC dealers were supplied with a official repair times publication. They sometimes come up for sale on 'e' bay.
