I've read a lot about track rod ends - both inner and outer - but my main problem is a constant bump induced rattle from the nsf. There appears to be nothing particularly wrong with the bushes and trunnions, but there's a little bit of play which seems to come from the inner track rod end.
The rattly nature of the vibration leads me to think it's not usually under much load.
If I need to fix this, am I right to assume that I have to remove the rack?

Have you tried replacing the rack damper, definitely improved the rattle on mine.
