engine mounts - correct shore/shape

splitting this off from the other thread as engine mounts are a significant diversion from the original topic!

Currently having really unpleasant vibrations after changing the engine mounts, primarily at a very specific rev range which is pretty much from idle to about 10mph in 1st gear.

I've bought two other sets, one from ESM and another from an ebay retailer. The ebay ones seem a little softer and (i think) are a better shape. I'm currently soaking the ESM ones in surgical spirit and wintergreen to try and soften up and if that doesn't work, will drill the ebay ones to try and make them a bit softer (they're about 60-65 shore all round, ESM is about 60-70).

the ideal would be to get some NOS ones, but Bryan isn't dealing with regular series1000 anymore unfortunately. anyone have any sitting about?

That's strange because ESM describe their's as "Made with the correct soft compound rubber."

I know it's of no help, but I replaced the engine mounts a few months ago, with ESM supplied, and experience no vibrations as you describe.

These are the Shore hardness of the BMC (genuine) and ESM engine mount rubbers.
The ESM mounts have been recently purchased.

The genuine BMC mount is slightly softer than the ESM mount.
The ESM and BMC engine mounts have the same curve.

aah, that's a shame.

good to know that the ESM ones are much harder (around 20% assuming the scale is linear!) than the proper ones. Hopefully my wintergreen concoction will soften these up, if not - drill time!

yes - it's neutral, but might slacken off more to see if it does anything

This is something that the ESM workshop told me recently. They advised me to reuse the BMC engine rubber mounts if at all possible because the new ones are too hard "and you won't like it". Unfortunately my old engine rubbers are not serviceable so I have had to buy new ones from ESM. Engine comes back from rebuild next week so I will soon find out what the new rubbers are like!

If they're anything like the ones I had installed - you definitely won't like it unfortunately.

However, the esm ones are out the pickling jar after 24 hours in the wintergreen/surgical spirit mix and the shore (at least on the outside bits) has gone from 65-70 to 55-65.

So, I'm going to leave in for another 24 hours and ask the garage to fit my new pickled pair!

Hmm. I'm going to install the engine myself so I only have myself to blame if the engine rubbers are unsatisfactory! I just can't find NOS mounts.

i highly recommend using wintergreen/surgical mix to soften the rubber in that case. I'm not sure how deep the softening has penetrated into the rubber though, but it's certainly helped soften it up

update, have managed to source some second hand engine mounts via Colin, who advertised 1098 spares in last months minor matters.

now to fit these and hope the vibration goes away!

New (old) mounts have been installed in place of the horribly hard ESM ones - everything is smooth as now.

The shore of the second hand ones i got were 45-50 btw.

I have just been for a test drive in my car. I installed ESM engine rubber mounts. The engine has been professionally rebuilt. I can't say I really noticed more vibration but possibly more transmission of noise. As yet I've only been up to 30 mph. Remains to be seen how the mounts perform at higher speeds.

I sat in some traffic and agree the vibration is there and a bit annoying!

yes, the difference is mostly at idle and pullaway revs up to maybe 5-10mph in first under the old mounts. lots of vibration in the body and even through the accelerator pedal.

new softer mounts are night and day to be honest. this engine now has a new reconditioned head, reground crank and bearings, oil pump, push rods, cam followers and rocker assembly.

weirdly still a little top-endy when cold with a bit of a rattle, but once warm it's really lovely and now pulls v well. oil pressure hasn't gone below 50psi yet either

Good to hear. I don't have an oil pressure gauge but the oil pressure warning light goes out briskly and the engine runs well. It too sounds a bit top-endy but I have checked the valve clearances and I assume this is just because the parts need time to bed in together. The engine is pretty tight if turning it over on the starting handle even with all of the spark plugs out. It is a novelty to have an engine that doesn't smoke or piddle oil everywhere! I encountered a problem I have never ever had on a Morris before. It is quite difficult to read the oil level on the dipstick because the oil is so incredibly clean!
