Steering wheel woes
Was so happy today when I thought id found a steering wheel for my 1957 Morris, but when fitted, the wheel can’t move far enough down the spline for the nut to go onto.
I must have purchased the wrong wheel, or maybe it’s one for a push horn perhaps? Please could any one advise?

Re: Steering wheel woes
I have a late car and little experience with the earlier series cars. The steering wheel you have bought looks right to me for what it is worth.
See:

On my late car it just happens that I re-fitted the steering wheel 2 days ago. Sometimes they stick and don't want to go down on the splines properly. You are right to take a pause, check and not force anything. Check there is no muck in the splines on wheel and steering column, clean as necessary, maybe a wipe of oil on the splines and try again. Try holding the wheel at opposite sides and giving it a jiggle as you push the wheel down onto the column.

Re: Steering wheel woes
They sometimes stick coming off so as others advise, clean splines on wheel and column and look for any deformities which may be causing the issue. A very light oiling may assist. This looks to be the correct steering wheel.
One more thought, there are what, at first sight, appear to be recessed (grub) screw holes on the underside of the central boss. Check that no-one has tapped them as an add-hoc means of securing the wheel to the column.

Re: Steering wheel woes
Thank you for this. I do wonder if your second paragraph holds an answer. When I put the wheel on, the wheel goes onto the spline and then sits on some kind of tab, pictured here https://photos.app.goo.gl/A38QYk1tnoWtsrBAA, then the spline doesn't protrude enough through the centre of the wheel for me to get a nut onto, as shown here https://photos.app.goo.gl/B8pYvq1TmPGxJYLs6.firedrake1942 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 17, 2025 8:13 am They sometimes stick coming off so as others advise, clean splines on wheel and column and look for any deformities which may be causing the issue. You seem to have a non standard spacer/washer there, have a look at the attached

Re: Steering wheel woes
Never seen a tab like that before - the bottom of the steering wheel boss goes over the indicator assembly sleeve. I wonder if someone fitted a sports type replacement steering wheel and that tab is the remnants of it.
It may be worth dropping the steering column out of its mounting and sliding the indicator sleeve down to see what you have got underneath.

Re: Steering wheel woes
Yes!, the car came with totally the wrong steering wheel. I have to remove the column soon anyway, so will investigate. I think we're getting to the bottom of this now thank goodness. https://photos.app.goo.gl/7J9EZkTi63CLsRZP9firedrake1942 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 17, 2025 2:57 pm Never seen a tab like that before - the bottom of the steering wheel boss goes over the indicator assembly sleeve. Re: Steering wheel woes
Careful if you take the plastic cover off the bottom of the indicator assembly they get very brittle and are like hens teeth to replace.

Re: Steering wheel woes
All sorted, you were right. Someone had added that washer like piece to stop the newer wheel dropping to far down. The washer/collar was an inertia fit and came off with a few little taps. One happy lady!firedrake1942 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 17, 2025 2:57 pm Never seen a tab like that before - the bottom of the steering wheel boss goes over the indicator assembly sleeve. Re: Steering wheel woes
Good, that's a relief - your car will be so much nicer with the correct steering wheel!
