Upholstery

I haven't quiet got there with my restoration just yet, but I am starting to think about the cost of re upholstering the seats in my 1957 MM.

I'm just inquisitive at this stage as to an approximate cost. Is there anyone willing to discuss please?

If you are looking at a complete new interior I would expect that to cost around £3000.00 based on quotes I got for my Minor 1000. That was using a complete trim kit, with leather facings, from Newton Commercial. I couldn't really justify that expense so eventually found and purchased another car of similar age which was badly rusted but with a very good interior. I have almost finished now removing all the interior from the second car, am cleaning it all and re-fitting it to my own. It is looking very good and period correct and I'm very pleased with it. It'll cost me less than one third of the cost of everything new and will look very good - and more authentic, so win win for me but it isn't always easy to come across good secondhand interior... You have to keep your eyes peeled.

Yes the new interior upholstery is very expensive. I had considered going down the good second hand route but my car gets used a lot and even the good second hand vinyl (for later cars) is getting rather old and tends to be brittle.

The interior will be the very last bit that gets done in my restoration.

I think it will be the very last bit of mine too...............and working plenty of overtime!

There are lots of cars out there with good interiors but terminal bodies. A second hand interior can be cleaned up and repaired, new seat straps fitted and frames painted for low costs. There's a huge volume of second hand interior for sale at the national rally every year, usually for very low cost. Carpets tend not to survive very well, so that may need to be a new purchase but an overhaul can be done quite cheaply.

Yes, it is worth trying to track down a second-hand interior. Years ago, I raided several cars in a scrap yard to provide a complete interior for a very early 1000 model. That may not be possible nowadays but rallies, autojumbles and adverts could be prospective places to find stuff. It may be possible to source these interior bits gradually as work continues on the rest of the car......

I recovered mine with duotone covers, light blue and cream in my case, I kept the original webbing and foam.
As a diy job it is not difficult.
I purchased the matching door cards at a later date, when finances allowed.
Again, easy to fit.
