Not understanding what you have written...
seems to long comes out of dash
It doesn't come out of the dash, so I can't imagine why 'too long' would be a problem.
It connects to the Pull Switch under the dash, where the Pull Switch fixes to the bulkhead..... :-?

Well it comes out the dash in that the 'pull' knob on one end of the cable is part of the dashboard configuration of knobs/switches. But if it really is too long, then shorten it! But, really, you shouldn't have to............... :-?

Yes but it's a Knob at one end and an inner cable that connects to the switch....If it'd got excess at the Switch end, which it shouldn't have, then cut a bit off, ...at the Switch End... so it looks like the photo.

Well, yes, it would be silly to cut it at the knob end!

A picture of the, I'll not write it, plastic end with a "S" could help to show the issue described. Is the inner cable pushed into the clamp connector far enough? Is the clamp connector pushed on to the switch far enough?
The plastic pull does have some free play on my pull cable. I have left well alone because the two clamping screws on the connector sleeve look very nasty!

Mervyn - it may be that the nut which holds the starter switch in position has come loose - that happened on mine a while ago and no way would pulling on the starter knob activate the switch. Tightened the nut back up and all was well again.....

Mr Detroit has gone silent since the 24th. More information is required, plus as I suggested, a picture.

New Member 'Detriot' is a person of few words and even fewer posts.
Their very first post resulted in an email with simmitc, but generally they are of the pattern shown here, a vague question or complaint, and nothing else. viewtopic.php?p=705427#p705427
I'm all for helping people who need help, including hidden disabilities and all such things, but they seem to post a new subject and then never log back in until their next one....

If it wasn't for Simon's mention of an email, I'd think this was all a wind up.
