Rear axel Morris Minor 1098cc

Post by LiselottesTraveller »

Hello,
We are close to finishing our restauration of our Traveller -65. But now, unfortunately we found that the threads on the rear axel casing are damaged.
We are now looking after a rear axel casing with good threads. It is not easy to find in Sweden, so we are happy to have tips for other axels that can fit Morris Minor 1000 Traveller 1098cc 1965.
Kind regards Liselotte

Hello Steve,
thank you for your reply, but unfortunately the remaining threads are to small for a die nut.

I know you are in Sweden but you could try MinorParts of Oxford and speak to Richard Plant. He deals in lots of second hand parts and sells good quality spares.

I’m not understanding why this casing cannot be repaired.

Remove and replace studs is not that difficult?

I read it that the hub retaining nut threads are damaged not the wheel stud threads.
If the hub retaining nut threads are damaged there is little that can be done other than hot metal spray the ends of the axle tube and then recut the threads.
Personally I would look for a good S/H 1098cc axle tube but as mentioned above axle tubes/casings in good condition are rare as I have recently found to my cost having procured qty 3 to replace a damaged casing and only one useable without work required.

Hey Phil
How much is a second hand rear axle approximately?
I've seen one for sale and am tempted to pick it up and clean it up as a straight swap on my car.
I don't know the details (neither does the seller) but if it'll fit then it could be well useful if the price is fair.

If the axle in your post is the one you are considering buying, it looks like a Series MM early Series 2 axle, not sure you would want to fit that to your later car. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to confirm the id of the axle.

Thank you. You are correct that I won't want it. What was the clue that gave it away to you?

The split 2 piece castings in the axle, the later axles are 1 piece design.

Last year I paid just under a £90 for a Minor 1098cc rear axle casing in excellent condition. The threads on the axle tube were perfect and the spring perches were is superb condition.
I had obtained two axles previously but rejected both as they were not perfect.
I have to admit that finding a Minor 1098cc rear axle casing in good to very good condition is near impossible these days.

Much appreciated. Geezer over here wants €280 for this one but as it'll not suit my car I'll pass.

Hello there. I have such an axle, I have just removed and sold the Diff but the casing is good and the half shafts and brakes are present.
It is currently rather oily at the moment but I can clean it up, and take you many pictures.
Will that be helpful?
The axle came from a 1964 traveller that was very well known on this forum.

Please let me know if I can assist.
Thanks
Al

Thank´s everybody for your replies ! We have now finally found ourselves a rear axel with good threads at morrisminor.dk ( Jylland, Denmark ) The old gentleman Anton, who owns it, has the largest collection of old Morris Minor parts in northern Europe.. it was quite an experience, and really worth all the miles we had to drive from Sweden to get there../ Liselotte
