Replacement clutch

Anyone had any experience with the clutches available on esm?

I see the old ap drive lines are no longer available and club spares doesn't have any left.

I had a B&B Clutch kit from them summer of 2023, I've probably only done about 1,000 miles or so since fitting it, but no problems so far.

I've had the "Borg and Beck" clutch from ESM installed for about 2 years. Admittedly, I don't do major mileage but no issues with the clutch so far.

Borg and beck is an old established name but the similarities between the old B&B parts and the new ones start and ends with the name. The new parts, brakes, clutch, suspension items etc, all seem decent. Andrew Eggelton is selling Girling clutch kits whic look decent but again, won't be 'old school' Girling.

thanks all - was actually thinking of sending the one currently in the car (provenance unknown, but ive had the car for 10 years now with no issues) to get re-lined, as suggested by a previous post on here.

good to hear the B&B aren't a complete disaster show though!

Not quite the same - but I put a B&B clutch in my sprite about 5 years ago. In less than 1000 miles the carbon thrust bearing had worn out. Was not impressed.

Clutch itself seems fine

interesting one Matt - is there a supplier of high quality thrust bearings in that case, rather than the bundled one with the B&B clutch?

Whereas my carbon thrust bearing (Borg and Beck) was installed about 10,000 miles ago along with a new clutch and shows minimal wear. I have the engine out for other reasons. You can see just a bit of carbon dust in the bell housing.

The carbon thrust could always be replaced with a roller/ball bearing type release.
You may have to do some minor modification but is not insurmountable.
This is the ball type release bearing fitted to my Minor. It is part home made and part CS Autoclassics and was fitted back in the 1990s and has given good service even though it is matched to a very strong racing clutch pressure plate.

If you want to fit a roller/ball release bearing I would have a word with Peter May Engineering as they do a conversion kit.

hi, Try speaking to Precision Clutch Components Tel 01963362484 their based in Somerset ,family firm will reface clutch plate, rebuild cover to oem spec
and can supply new carbon release bearing. If you have any concerns over China sourced products these guys can help.
