Steering rack oil capacity

Post by ROGER B »

1970 1000 Traveller. One of the bellows on the rack has split allowing the oil to escape. After replacing (both) bellows, how much EP90 is needed to refill the rack? Many thanks.

The manual says to "pump approximately 1/2 pint (0.28l) of hypoid oil....into the rack housing through the nipple.." on re-assembly of the steering gear.

Unfortunately the quality of some modern steering rack gaiters has meant I have had to lubricate my Traveller's rack from empty more often than I would expect. A couple of them lasted less than 18 months. After an unsuccessful attempt to inject EP90 with an old grease gun (oil everywhere except in the rack) I now remove the nipple with a socket (11mm fits I think from memory) and give it a dozen generous squirts from an oil can with a flexible nozzle. I understand you shouldn't overfill it because it can put pressure on the gaiters and make early failure even more likely. Cheers, Bill H
