But I had a very annoying rattle/clonk that was very difficult to locate. It turned out to be the engine steady bar. If the engine head had been removed then so would have the steady bar. The rubber bushes/washers do not always sit properly afterwards. Easily checked by just removing it temporarily.
That's a good suggestion Nickol, the noise does seem to be a little louder when nearer the bulkhead....
yup, good suggestion - will check out the condition of the rubbers too.
In breaking news - I contacted a local classic car storage garage to see if they have a person they send customers to if they have issues. put me in touch directly with the person who maintains the (small) fleet of classic minis you may have seen around London and he's up for having a look. will be great to have someone give a second opinion in person, as I understand it's near impossible to diagnose from just a video.
A long shot but over on the Facebook group an owner found that their knocking noise was caused by a makeshift metal bracket attached to the exhaust rather than the proper flexible hanger.

1969 1098cc Convertible “Xavier” which I have owned since 1989.
so - the car went in for checking to a local classic specialist. Engine out to have a look and ended up having a lot done - the clutch was worn down to rivets, so replaced that and the rear main was copper all over. Went for a replacement crankshaft from ESM (along with new bearings etc) and whilst i was at it had a new oil pump, starter (was really worn), water pump, timing chain and checked the cam which was all good. Engine mounts were separated, so had to reluctantly buy new ones.
Engine now runs quiet and very nicely, with much more pull and good oil pressure. HOWEVER - it's shaky as hell at low revs, with the steering wheel, windows and bonnet all rattling. I'm assuming this must be an issue with the mounts/steady, as it goes away at high revs thereby discounting crank balance issues etc??
I called ESM and they report no issues with the new mounts, with the bad batch reported here being scrapped years ago. Any thoughts / tips to help sort would be greatly appreciated
so, i've ordered mounts from two suppliers (one ESM another on ebay) along with a durometer.
Both appear to be too hard - according to other posts on here, they should be around 60 shoreA, but i'm getting readings of around 65-70 on the ESM ones and similar ish on ebay ones.
I think i might need to drill them or soak in surgical spirit/wintergreen mix to stop this infernal vibration (really, really unpleasant when pulling away, especially when blipping throttle).
i'm surprised no-one else has the issue recently however. I got in contact with the usual guy at club spares, who says he now only deals with Series MM.
