I am thinking that maybe the flasher relay is on the blink (pardon the pun). I had a devil of a job getting one that would work for more than a month. I tried different suppliers but the were all the same. I now have led bulbs in the indicators and a modern flasher unit. All is working well.
Try a new or known to work flasher unit to check that this is where your problem lies.

If you have standard incandescent indicator bulbs then try a known to work flasher can (the one on the bulkhead) of the Lucas SFB100 type. This is the original type relay that works by heating up a bimetallic strip that makes and breaks the circuit that causes the indicator to flash.

If you have fitted LED indicator bulbs then problems with the tell-tale lamp on the end of the indicator stalk are known to occur. This can be resolved with a modern flasher unit that also has an earth connection of the correct polarity for the car. The modern electronic flasher cans that look like the SFB100 but have electronic internals do not usually work properly. It is something to do with the fact that the current has to be able to flow in either direction through the tell-tale bulb depending on whether the stalk is in the indicating right or indicating left position.

If by any chance you changed the tell-tale bulb for an LED, just put it back to an incandescent bulb.

All the Best,

I'm going to assume, in the absence of information to the contrary, that the wiring is standard.
Electrically, for the flasher and the tell-tale lamp, there is absolutely no difference between left and right operation as the selection switch(36) is after the flasher(43).

I would use a meter to check for the output from the flasher to the tell-tale, (44).
I strongly suspect it will be fine for both selections.
It seems to me that there may be a poor connection of the lamp itself or the wiring in the stalk. Selecting Up for Left is breaking the circuit.
Remove the cowling around the switch and examine the wiring for the tell-tale.
