Escort rear axle handbrake lever dust covers

Post by Cam »

Does anyone have any idea where I can get hold of a pair of dust covers (small gaiters) that the handbrake mechanism passes through on the back of the brake drum backplates on the MK 2 Escort (Timken - or English) rear axle??

I have tried Ford themselves (discontinued part)
JLH Minors - where I got the axle from (can't get any)
Capri and Escort spares (only got knackered ripped ones!)
Small Ford Spares (too new a car for them!!)
Classic Ford Spares (number no longer in existance!)

Apparently (I was told) that they may be listed under Lucas, Lockheed, Girling, or Part Co. So I rang my local Motor Factors (pretty good chaps who usually know what they are doing) and they can't find them listed either!!

I was also told to try the Ford owner's club, but I can't find a contact address anywhere on the internet! (amazing eh??)

Someone must do them! I find it hard to believe that all the MK 2 Escorts are going around with the original rubbers, or none at all.

Unfortunately I have been driving around without any for quite a while now, and the gradual water ingress has caused the handbrake mechanism to sieze, which I have now freed off and coated in copperslip but I don't want a repeat performance!

Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received!

Thanks Kevin, you are a star!!

I'll ring them tomorrow during office hours.

The classic Ford spares number I had was: 07970 0069332 (mobile I presume) and yes, it was a disconnected tone.

Cheers mate!! :D

Kevin,

Cortina Parts UK ltd - Mk 2 Cortina specialists (Don't do parts for the Timken axle)

Tick Over Capri specialists (no chance)

Classic Ford Parts (no way)

J.E.M. Vintage & Classic car consultants (engaged twice, engineer out 3rd time I rang!)

Classic Ford Specialist John Blythe, Goldendays (2 IN STOCK -WHOOOHOO) they are 2nd hand but absolutely mint (apparently) only a few weeks old according to him! BUT they are £12 each, making it £26 including p&p!

So, I bit the bullet and ordered them! VERY expensive and he can't supply them on a regular basis due to their scarecity. They come in and go out!!

So, at least I will have some now after 10 months of looking!!

Thanks again Kevin!! :D

Cam glad you found some, if they are that difficult to find why are they not remaking them, there are enough Escorts around and a fair few other cars with the ford axle transplanted and at £12 each second hand that means they go for a fair premium. I wonder what the axle specialists do when they supply exchange units, makes you wonder.
Cheers

Yeah, that's what I thought. Doesn't make sense does it?

I have enquired about this, and they either transplant the original ones over to the recon unit, or if it is a straight out supply then they don't supply any.

Apparently, that is one of the first things that they strip off the axle when they get them in.

Mind you, a few people said that the Timken axle supply was getting a bit thin on the ground now! :o

Not ideal is it?
