Engine bay illumination
Dear All
Had half an hour spare today and pondered.... what if I break down at night.... well the solution is to carry a torch or
Before.. After... and the LED strip.... Spot the croc clips on the battery....
P.S. Admin The photos still aren't the right way up ?
John ;-)

Re: Engine bay illumination
Very ingenious! How long does the battery last with the light on?

Re: Engine bay illumination
I'd say a hell of a long time, but I'll go and measure the current ( milliamps ) and check the battery capacity...
P.S. They're not on all the time... ;-)

Re: Engine bay illumination
According to my Calculations 22,105.26 Hours ( 921 days approx)
1.9mA,42Ah battery

Very good. Let's hope your roadside repair doesn't take that long!

Re: Engine bay illumination
That's due to you posting from your phone, or images on your PC that originated on your Phone and you haven't corrected the data/settings the phone gave it...
I just saved your image to my PC, rotated it and then re-saved. Voila That's a very busy looking engine bay. Nice to see the Servo the right way around.
I've seen the occasional classic with a period bakelite bulb holder under the bonnet.

Re: Engine bay illumination
Well maybe, but i sent them from my phone to my laptop , where they appear the correct orientation, then posted here and they've flipped??
Being a total numpty ...what/where do I have to alter ?

Re: Engine bay illumination
Are you sure it's 1.9mA, or could it be 19mA or 190mA. LED's must have improved somewhat, I'd expect a single white LED to draw 10mA, although I have noticed torches use high speed switching to reduce the current consumption.

Re: Engine bay illumination
I've had that. The PC can 'compensate' somehow, I guess there must be some small byte of info that can let the PC interpret the phone angle.
What I do on the PC, assuming it 'looks OK' on the PC already, is upload it and then check the Post Preview.
If it's wrong there I delete the uploaded and open the original in a photo viewer that allows editing, even if it's just rotating.
Even if it looks 'the right way' in the viewer I rotate it and re-save it. That invariably sorts it out.

1.93mA
rotated 90 clockwise.....
I GIVE UP....

Re: Engine bay illumination
False reading I think, on your meter for current under 200mA you need to connect the Red lead to the right input socket not the left 10A socket.

Thank you, I stand corrected ( internal fuse gone on the mA input ) , 179ma , 234 Hours , approx 9,8 days..

Re: Engine bay illumination
Still plenty of time to carry out a roadside repair!
Re: Engine bay illumination
A nice idea for many faults.
But what if the breakdown is due to a flat battery?

Re: Engine bay illumination
A 'Flat' Battery that won't start the car (requires 110+ Amp) will most probably power a lamp requiring milliamps...

Re: Engine bay illumination
A Branch member suffered a battery boiled dry (and volt free) by a faulty control box.
Perhaps the best solution is a lamp with its own internal battery that's on a permanent float off the main battery?
I reckon it's better to be detatchable, so it can illuminate problem areas, rather than putting them in shadow.

Re: Engine bay illumination
Find this more useful than a fixed light
Torch and worklight it has hanger and magnetic base which can be rotated and tilted.
Long battery life and recharges from usb or can power your dead phone.
