Hi all. My 1959 car has a Charles Ware job gearbox in it - Ford Type 9 (find them in Ford Sierras). Everything runs alright except the whine. It's rather loud in any gear except 4th, and after having warmed up (driven more than about 30 mins) it slowly grows into a more horrible musical chord of unexpected gear whinery in 3rd.
If used for a prolonged journey of an hour or more then 1st, 2nd, and 5th also get louder and more musically worrying whines. 3rd once verged on a "groan" rather than whine. I've always stopped if this occurs. It's not very reassuring that the only ever time I've heard a similar noise was an old episode of Top Gear wherein a certain J Clarkson killed an ailing classic Alfa.
I am guessing, obviously enough, that the car is owed a gearbox rebuild. I haven't done this before. Any agree/disagree with that, and how can I best sort out a new gearbox? Or just parts?
Gearbox Whine - dreadfully expected?

I would suggest that you do need to overhaul the type 9 gearbox.
Overhaul of the type 9 gearbox is relatively easy.
There are several U Tube videos relating to the overhaul of the type 9.
Here is one link to the overhaul and supply of parts for the type 9 gearbox

We can assume you have checked the oil level?

I would suggest that if the oil level has been allowed to fall and the gearbox is making the noise described above it will still be in line for an overhaul.

I had the gearbox oil changed a couple of months ago at the garage. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to easily check it myself since the type 9 gearbox isn't user friendly. Love it if anyone has tips for checking.
