Brake bleeding kit

Post by Rasputin »

Can anyone suggest a one man brake bleeding kit that actually works?

I do mine using one of the vacuum pumps you can buy off the auction sites. I have just changed my master cylinder and done a total fluid change on all lines, good solid pedal in about 30 minutes, easy, and none of the down, hold, up, down.........

It can pull some air in around the bleed nipple threads, but none of this goes near the internals, you just have to judge that the bubbles you see are air being entrained this way and not from the actual lines. If you take the bleed nipples right out and put a good lug of red rubber grease around the threads it helps to seal them while bleeding this way, or if you have DOT5 fluid whatever grease is compatible with it.

If you pull enough fluid through it has to be withour air, think I worked out that 25 - 30mls at the nearside rear wheel is more than enough to pull it right through and some.

This way certainly works for me everytime, easily with no mess or fuss.

I was thinking about trying one of these - is this the vacuum pump mentioned above, or has anyone used anything similar?

Thanks for this biomed32uk - I was having problems with the air leakage determining when the system was bled however adopted your approach and let the vacuum pull fluid through at each wheel until I had topped up the master cyl +/-30ml - worked fine. As you note the bleed nipple leakage does not impact on the internal system.
