Paint shrinkage

Post by Stevie R »

Hi everyone
Just wondering I have what looks like paint shrinkage on my bonnet there are a couple of what I would describe as little hair line cracks it looks like fine hairs on the side of the bonnet, I don’t think it warrants going down the respray route but is there a product to cover over them?

Hi Stevie
I could be that the bonnet has been repainted with an incompatible paint system, such as cellulose on top of acrylic. There isn’t any easy fix other than removing the existing paint and repainting. It could also be that the car has had several repaints and the paint is too thick, so the paint doesn’t flex as the car gets hot on a very sunny day then cools. Old paint can loose it’s flexibility and dry out,
All the best,
Paul

Mine has the same problem (along with microblistering!) It was resprayed a few years ago in 2-pack. As said above, the only way to sort it properly is to rub it down and respray it, but you can always run some of the same colour paint into the cracks using either a fine paint brush or even rolled-to-a-point masking tape. Wipe away any excess with a lightly thinners-soaked tissue or similar. Repeat as many times as necessary to fill the cracks.
