Hello,
I have a new can of Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 cavity spray, and I want to protect the hidden cavities of my Moggy against the evils of rust!
Is there such a thing as a simple diagram showing where the best places to insert the spray probe are?
I am happy to drill holes where necessary, but any top tips will be much appreciated!
I have already protected the visible areas with a suitable covering, but it’s the hidden/inaccessible parts I want to protect now.
Many thanks,
Pete

The crossmember under the rear seat (which is also the area above the front mountings of the rear springs) is important. Easily accessed once the rear seat base is removed. Inside the doors and bootlid. With the boot open get inside the boot catch support bracket and also a good blast up inside the rear "chassis legs" or spring hangers which are open at the rear end. I would remove the rear quarter trim panels (or wheel arch trims if a 4door) and quirt into the inside of the rear panelwork and wheelarch areas. At the front, all around the inner wings, inside the front crossmember and front chassis legs, the door pillars - these can be accessed from inside the car more easily with the glovebox liners removed. Last but not least, I would remove the bolt-on sill rails and kick panels completely in order to get inside the sill box sections, clean out all the dirt and apply a good coat of protection in there. There will be other places too but that probably is enough to start with?
It is a good "dirty weekend" but well worth the time spent. Make sure you wear old clothes and overalls. Maybe a hat and disposable gloves.

You need to spray something that will creep not just stay where you spray it.
My 1957 Minor has been sprayed with a mixture of oil and white spirit since near new and very little rust has appeared. The front chassis legs and rear spring hangers are original.
Do the spraying on a warm day.
The rear chassis legs may have foam inside - if they have it needs to be removed to allow the preservative to access the inside of the chassis leg.
Removing the brake master cylinder cover and gearbox cover gives good access to the front chassis legs.
I trimmed my gearbox cover on the N/S and fitted a brake master cylinder cover to give better access in the future.

Is this a job which should be repeated periodically and, if so, how often?

Before I owned the car the hidden parts were sprayed every year on its annual service date.
I used to service and spray the car before I actually owned it.
The car has been regularly sprayed at at least once a year since I have owned it and that ownership is currently around 55 years.
You cannot spray too much!!

OK, thanks for the reply, Phil

Thank you all for this superb information! I shall wait for this rain to stop before embarking on reaching and saturating my Moggy's hidden areas with protecting preservative! I hadn't thought of some of those areas, so I might need to order another can - I shall include an annual spray as part of my service routine as well!
A friend is lending me his endoscope device, hopefully I wont see too many rusty horrors.....
Best regards,
Pete
