I have always thought that the sidelight goes out to allow the sometimes very small indicators to be seen clearly. Also, I think it is only courtesy to use indicators at all times, when you are changing direction. From a safety point of view, you may have missed a pedestrian or other road user (low flying electric scooter or God-forbid and actual pedal cycle that requires effort).
