Floor panel applying brake when bolted down

Post by Andmurph »

Is there a way to lower the brake pedal?
I have a problem, when I screw down the transmission tunnel floor panel around the pedals the panel applies the brakes leaving no free movement at all. The previous owner’s solution was to leave it unscrewed in that corner and put the carpet back. It’s a solution that works but I’d rather try and do it properly. There is a cut out in the panel below the pedal which looks similar to others I’ve seen online. To fix by extending that cut out would need around 10cm cutting out to stop it interfering with the brake pedal.

Many thanks

The problem is not the floor panel but the length of the threaded rod that connects the bottom of the brake pedal to the master cylinder. It appears that the threaded rod needs to be shortened. It is adjustable.

Yes, the push rod for the brake master cylinder is out of adjustment causing the brake pedal to be too high. The adjustment is inside the rubber gaiter on the master cylinder. You need to shorten the push rod so that the pedal provides the appropriate free play with the floor screwed into place.

Good luck

To be correct the adjustment is just in front of the rubber gaiter but it may be obscured by the rubber gaiter. If you remove/displace the rubber gaiter you may not be able to get the gaiter back in place.

Indeed I have found the yoke connector and shortened it as far as possible but still have the issue.
ESM lost two yoke to clevis pin connectors CBS138 and CBS138A the photos suggest the C138 maybe a couple of mm shorter.
Perhaps I’ll try shortening the one I have fitted.

Thanks

Are they not just one with clevis pin and one without?
Is it scewing fully into the pushrod, are the threads clean? Are you sure the push rod is going into the piston recess correctly?
You could do a temporary test with the lock nut removed just to see if you get clearance.

If you have shortened the push rod as much as you can you may have a pattern master cylinder fitted. Everything pattern is notorious for not being exactly to spec. You may well have to shorten the push rod to get it right.
If I remember correctly there was a post about the wrong brake master cylinder push rod/piston posted on here recently and how they overcame the problem. I will do a search and see what I can find and put up a link.

Thanks Bill and Phil. I’ll give it a try with the lock nut removed first and see if that’s enough.

Cheers
