Trafficator wiring

Post by Mr Spigot »

Although I have trafficators fitted to my 1960 car, they have not worked for decades and I am unsure if the wiring is even still there. If I wish to recommission them to work, what route do the wires take from them to the switch? As far as I can see, they either go down and along the sill (inside?) or up and across the roof above the lining. Either route will be difficult to follow with roof lining and carpets in situ and I really don't want to have to pull it all apart!

You don't say which model you have. On the 4-doors they go up and across the roof, under the headlining. I am not sure about the other models. However, if you remove the trim to get at the trafficators you should be able to see if the wiring is still there. I would hope that, as the trafficators are still in situ, the wires will be as well. They may have just been disconnected from the switch which has then been wired up for flashing indicators.
I had a car once that the trafficators had been removed from, but the wires were still there and a simple matter to fit replacement ones. I did need an additional switch mounted under the dash so that both the trafficators and the flashers could be operated independently of each other.

Thanks. I have a 2 door model. I have yet to investigate the wiring and very much hope it is still in situ to make the job easier. I was putting this out as a pre-emptive question, as I know from over 40 years playing with these cars that assuming the easy route rarely comes true in practice! It is a standing joke with my wife when she asks how long it will take and I say ' an hour or so' and she replies 'well that's the whole day gone then' !!

I found this:
"On the two door the trafficator wires run from the main loom where it enters the boot (trunk) from underneath the car. The right trafficator wire, green/white, runs over the rear wheel arch behind the trim panel, up the B post to the trafficator. The left trafficator wire, green/white, runs across the boot behind the seat and over the left wheel arch."

Thank you. The problem I will have is that if I connect from the main loom at the rear, the current will be coming via the flasher unit to the rear indicators (later fitting) and my trafficators will start waving!

With a bit of luck, whoever fitted the flashers fitted new wiring and didn't use the original trafficator wiring. In the case of the car I mentioned earlier, there was new wiring to the rear flashers, which ran from the switch under the carpet and under the back seat, and from the switch through the bulkhead to the front flashers. I just needed to mount an additional switch under the dash, and wire up the trafficators with the original wiring, leaving the flashing equipment operating off the original switch and the new wiring exactly as it was when I first got the car. You are just going to have to investigate and see what is there.

It's only a bit of wiring.
But it's not a simple question to answer because it depends what you currently have.
When I got my (SII) car it had the trafficators installed still, but not connected as it had been reloomed with a DB10 indicator system, which itself had been altered to feed separate indicators rather than flash the Brake lights....

I've now got it with the DB10 system restored and trafficators as a selectable addition.
I have posted diagrams on here a few years ago....

Yes, I think it makes sense to have the flashers and the trafficators wired independently of each other - to have them operating together all the time is not always desirable. I normally use the flashers, reserving the trafficators for special occasions!
