air intake

Post by stuffedpike20 »

The air intake on my minor is permanently pointed at the back of the exhaust manifold.
Is there a summer setting for this? Should the carb be sucking in slightly cooler air?

Thanks
John

Don't know what year you have but on my 1098 the intake is rearward in winter and can be rotated forwards in summer when the intake trumpet is infront on the carburettor.

The earlier 'saucepan' type of filter housing can also be moved in position.

I reckon you can only do that because your air cleaner assembly is broken and the intake pipe is not there as far as I can see?

It's not obvious but I can see it, beside the float chamber, blocking the view of the servo below.

It's not broken, the intake trumpet is along side the float chamber,

You must have better eyesight than me John :) I couldn't see it at all! The metal pipe does frequently break off those later filter housings

Just turn the air filter body so that the air intake pipe clears the exhaust manifold.

Which pipe? The breather from the rocker cover to filter?
Mine was from esm and it fits in either air cleaner position.

I just cut fuel resistant rubber pipe to length. Yes, it requires two pieces for the desired summer/winter positioning of the air intake.
13mm/half inch inside diameter. I find that 20/21mm o.d. bends better.

One very cold morning a long time ago, I had a carb ice up. I was doing 30mph. Came to a junction, and the revs did not come down.
A couple of minutes later when the engine had warmed up, the icing cleared.

Sadly, we do not get very cold mornings like that any more.

I'm with Phil, just turn it about 25 deg Winter/Summer.....
At the Exhaust or Clear of Exhaust.

Yes, just move away from the manifold. IIRC some earlier Welsh hats had a summer/winter transfer on the edge. It was a long time ago though!
