Can no one provide a gearbox and brake fluid extension filler pipe

Post by Mercmancdi »

Might sound silly but has anyone ever came up with a small extension pipe with cap for gearbox and brake fluid reservoir so it comes up lever with carpets so that new carpet can be fitted securely in one section, or even is there a flexi pipe to take steering rack nipple round to engine bay down side of chassis.
( Don’t be shouting ) i just think it might suit some people and allow for better quality underlay and carpet helping to make cabin more quiet and comfortable.

In that case I will whisper this - there are no aftermarket master cylinder reservoir extensions or means of fitting a extension pipe to the steering rack oil nipple. That part of the rack is too close to the footboard to get a 90 degree connection in place.
As regards the underlay/carpet - my advice is - do not glue it down.
With the underlay/carpet glued down you are encouraging the floor to rust. You need to be able to lift the underlay/carpet every so often to let the air get to the metal floor so as to keep the rust at bay.

Sssssssh don’t tell everybody.
Guess your right bit of good air is a good thing .
Considering I am only after spending a lot of time and money making sure the floor is well protected for another no of yrs hopefully. The carpet in it when I got it was a pain as it was stuck to what I believe was stone chip or similar , and i had to peel carpets out spent 3 days with heat gun and scraper to to get the floor totally back to the original, then prepped repaired and rust protected.
Have a mate has a carpet outlet will get them to put carpets in.

Years ago I bought a 1 litre bottle of oil. It cam with a semi-flexible pipe attached to the cap. Ever since them, I just refill it from a 20 litre drum whenever I want to top up the gearbox. Remember that you need to be able to see the filler hole to get the correct oil level. I use the same type of bottle for the back axle. Master cylinder is easy - fit one of the readily available remote reservoir kits. Makes it much easier to keep an eye on the level and reduces the risk of contamination when filling.

I use a short length of suitable pipe stuck on the end of a funnel.
When refitting the filler plug I use a 3/4" AF socket with a piece of paper towel stuffed into it which holds the plug when inserting. Prevents the plug falling out and crawling around under the car to retrieve it only for it to fall again.

Yes, I use a funnel for the gearbox and oil gun for the steering rack. I also have a metal cover in the floor above the gearbox that makes it easier to remove/replace the filler plug and see the oil level. Secured with two screws, you loosen one, unscrew the other and the cover will swing sideways.

Yes it is suitable for Minors with drum brakes.
The kit is only suitable for original type master cylinders. It is not suitable for after market/pattern type master cylinders.
