Fitting new front window rubber
Hi if have windscreen out and ready for new rubber
( not split screen) is it very hard to fit new rubber , it said on sheet fit plastic chrome strip befor fitting window.
Does a gentle heat from heat gun help or who thinks bit of fairy liquid is best. Roughly how long for 2 people.
Was going to do mine on Saturday as I can get a hand for couple of hrs.
Thanks.

It's covered in R23 section of the manual. AKD 530. You can download for free of Internet

Just one note. Do not use washing up liquid. That stuff probably contains salt which will not be good for the sealing lip. Alternatively use shampoo or swarfiga.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
Thanks I have done a few Austin allegro etc in yrs gone by they were very simple , sat on drivers seat pushed screen out with feet and then replaced just was hoping the minor would be as easy. ( yrs ago that’s how we took all the screens out of a relatives breakers yard as young guys used to break them if touched on the edge with screwdriver) used to win bets by breaking screens with a 50p just by tapping on the edge.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
Can’t find a manual or not available. Opened my new window rubber and the mirror part is all cracked. Bought from morrisminorparts.
Asking them to replace this can I fit the mirror trim after the window is fitted or has to be fitted first.
Any advise please as it would let me get on with it while waiting on replacement trim.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
I thought you had to fit the plastic style insert after fitting the windscreen.
Rubber to glass first, Glass with rubber to car, then the plastic chrome insert to close the rubber nice and tight. It’s easier to use the tool to open the rubber and insert the chrome fillet.
I think it’s the stainless steel surround version that needs to be fitted to the rubber first.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
Last one I did I used plastic coated washing line. You need some strong twine, and the plastic coated washing line does not stick on the lip of the new rubber as you pull it over the metal lip.
Make sure the metal lip is in good condition. I smear rubber grease on the outside of the metal lip to help the rubber pull over it. Although inserting the plastic trim should seal the rubber and make it leak proof, it probably does no harm to have a bit of rubber grease on the outside of the metal lip.
Put the washing line (does no harm to cover it in rubber grease too) in the groove of the new rubber and cross it over at one of the bottom corners. One of you outside, and one of you inside the car, start to pull the rubber over the metal lip in the bottom corner.
There is a tool for fitting the plastic trim available, but you can make your own. Take a section of wire coat hanger and bend a flattened diamond shape at the end just a bit wider than the plastic trim.. Put a couple of steps in the wire to keep it an inch above the rubber , push it into the channel in the rubber and push the plastic trim into the channel as you move the wire tool along.
I start the plastic trim at the top of the screen an inch or so before the mid point of the screen because the plastic trim will move along slightly as you fit it. Be careful at the corners to make sure the plastic trim is in the groove. The plastic trim is longer than it needs to be, so trim it off in the mid point of the screen.
The tool you can buy to fit the plastic trim sometimes has a roller behind the wire diamond to push the plastic trim into the groove. See them on ebay, under 'windscreen trim tool'.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
Thank you , does the new rubber seal need to be run around outside with small nozzle of black mastic to totally seal it to car body Also do you run a small bead of clear mastic with small nozzle around between glass and rubber on outside to totally seal it. Years ago I remember doing old cars like Datsun sunny etc but just heated the rubber when finished and they never leaked.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
I have only done a few, but if you use a nice new rubber, and the metal lip is in good condition, you should not need any mastic etc to get a waterproof seal.

Re: Fitting new front window rubber
Put screen in waiting on new chrome trim hoping it opens rubber up to close the gap at corners.
