Diff oil level ?????

Post by Gunner »

Hi all,

replacing the oil in diff and a bit confused whether it’s 1 litre of oil as stated in the Autobooks workshop manual or, as I have experienced in other vehicles and the Moggy gearbox, whether it’s filled until oil runs back out of the filler? My diff has both drain and filler and it’s on a 57 4-door not that the number of doors makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

From memory, I think it is 1.75 pints (roughly a litre) but if you fill the diff until it starts running out of the filler hole, then wait until it stops dripping, and then re-fit the filler plug all will be well.

I just done my 1098 and 1ltr I had bought 2 but 1 was just about right maybe a couple of capfuls at most and mine was well drained as it was sitting for a week or so with bung out jacked up and down . You remember to remove filler bung first. And as previously was said fill until it drips out

Not knowing the history behind the previous owners oil management regime, I have already drained the old oil from the diff. It didn't look like there were any shiny bits in the oil - happy days - so having let it sit overnight have have put in 1 Ltr of new oil as stated in the WSM but no over-run from the filler port. It is on jacks and nearly level but don't want to overfill the diff but also don't want to underfill.

Are there any views to the contrary to comments made by myoldjalopy ????

The oil capacity of a Morris Minor 1000 rear axle is 1.5 pints as specified in the BMC wksp manual.
You should fill the diff until it overflows the filler hole. Let the excess drain off and then re-fit the filler plug.

I did mine recently, bought 1 litre, emptied the bottle, none dripped from filler hole, it looked about 2 mm short. Unusually for me, I’m not worrying about it !!————van was not left on the jack.
