Reducing dif whine

Post by Michiel »

Dear all,

If I renew sun and planet gears, planet gears shaft, and the 4 bronze washers, will the dif whine be noticeable reduced?

Not if you mix gears from different sets, or mix used with new.

For clarification, if the teeth of any new gear mesh with the teeth of any original gear a whine is likely, for the simple reason, gears wear together as sets. However if all the meshing teeth are new, you can’t do any more.

I know many people get a bit uppity on such things, but I have used Molyslip gearbox for decades to reduce or even eliminate noisy diff and gearbox whine in bikes and cars.
It's worth a try, and may resolve your issue....

I’m no expert, but sun and planet gears won’t make a diff whine, they only turn slowly when cornering.
The whine comes from the crown wheel and pinion, could be worn, could need setting up.

Is you whine worse on drive or overrun?
Have you measured the back lash at the input.
Would agree Sun and planet gears very rarely cause a whine as driving straight they are not under any load, pinion the crownwheel set up or bearing are more likely.

I've put new bronze in and the backlash at the driveshaft flange has been halved. Whine only when driving. Worst at 50-ish mph. Otherwise it is an untouched dif . Must be the bearings then. Molyslip advice seems worth trying.

Are you sure it's not a wheel bearing?
What do you mean by new bronze? It's pinion and crownwheel setting that control backlash.

The bronze thrust washers of sun- and planet gears. Specially the ones from the planet gears can be worn, so the gears can slide on its shaft. I saw this sliding taking up some slack when you move the driving flange back and forth. But I suppose slack is everywhere in my dif :D

It won’t necessarily sort the problem. The most likely source of diff whine is the crown-wheel and pinion clearances. It’s a precision job setting up the difg.
