STARTER REPAIR -Now load Noise from engine

So last week I had to be towed home from work as starter was playing up. (Morris Minor 1098cc Load Noise from engine Van 1969).

Pulled the started motor out and removed and cleaned Bendix and tested which was all ok as it was sticking before and starter continued while engine was going.
So yesterday started up my van and it made a load noise as engine and continued (started ok and starter disenagaged OK). I posted a vid on youtube under "Johan Morris Minor Van".

Would appreciate some help identifying this one please. The only thing I could think of is that the fly wheel has come loose

Did you check the condition of the starter ring gear on the flywheel?
I suspect that the ring gear is worn and causing your problem.
Unfortunately an engine or gearbox out to replace the ring gear.

How would the ring cause the noise? only even the starter is permanently engaged, to menable it to make the Noise.
I will remove the starter motor cone to be 100% shore it is dissengaged.

As I do not have a crank handle I will start the car and remove the starter motor to see if it still makes the noise.

Be VERY carful removing the starter from a running engine, if you catch the moving ring gear the stater could kick and I jure your hand.

I would advise against starting the car and then removing the starter motor. If the Bendix touches the ring gear/flywheel the starter could be snatched out of your hands and expensive damage to both you and the car caused.
If the ring gear is damaged/worn the starter Bendix can make an awful noise.
I would recommend that you obtain a starting handle before doing anything.

I agree, damn near impossible to do it without catching it.

If you know the engine will fire up and run easily and you have no starting handle, you could consider removing the starter motor and then bump start the engine..........a handle would be better though.

Would a ‘69 have one fitted? I don’t know but if not there won’t be a hole for a handle?

Simpler might be to park on a slope and then (safely) remove the starter, followed by a ‘bump’ start. Alternatively, a tow start. Only needs to be done once.

Yes, all Minors to the end of production could be started on the handle. Its such a handy feature that I don't know why cars stopped having them. Good for starting when the battery is too low to turn the starter over properly and also for turning engine when checking valve clearances etc.

As already said, all Minors had a starter dog on the crank pulley originally. Sometimes the starter dog has been replaced with a bolt and so the car cannot be started using a starting handle.
