Brush Painting

When I purchased ( Rosie) my Minor, she had a lot of work done on her including a new floor, clutch, and a rebuilt engine with unleaded head and telescopic shocks all around, but the owner at the time must have run out of money because he brush painted her, up close it didn't look very good, I tried using a buffer and cutting compound but the paint had been put on thick in some places and wafer thin in others, I have started sanding it down and found some dodgy bits under the paint where he had painted many times over the same spot to cover up some pitting in the metal,
So I am at a point where the boot and wings have been sanded back and a very thin skim of filler applied to fill any defects, I am still not sure how I'm going to apply the top coat as I have no spray gun and no experience in spraying, A friend of mine has done his A40 with a roller and cut back each coat and it looks quite good now that its been buffed.

You could try using one of these:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166223831468 ... BMnq7k1oFk. It's pretty easy to get a perfectly acceptable finish with them; just practice on a bit of gash metal sheet first (something like an empty oil can) to get a feel for for it and develop a side-to-side spraying technique. Thank you for letting me know about this spray gun, that is exactly what I need, so I have ordered one, I hope it comes out as good as your Norton.

Thats an interesting video and he did a great job of it, but I have to balance my lack of skill with the working conditions, I am lucky to have a car port that is open on each end and by putting tarpaulin sheet over the ends I can make a crude spray booth, I am not looking for a showroom finish ( although that would be a bonus ) but the paint on the car now looks like it was applied with a yard broom, and anything reasonable would be an improvement and having a car in one shade would be great.

I have taken off the boot lid and it is sanded down and ready for paint, this will be a good chance to test my spraying skills, I will spray a primer on it first and see what that comes out like, I am lucky in have a boot that doesn't need welding, I am still waiting for the spray gun to arrive and I will practise first on a piece of scrap metal.

The spray gun has arrived, but the weather is against me now, I'm not in a rush as I have other jobs to be getting on with.

I have learnt that if you are going to work on your Minor then you should do it out of sight of others, I tried to buff the paint on " Rosie " when we first got her, and people commented on the shine, but up close it looked rough so I started to sand her down, then the comments started " Oh what have you done to the paintwork" and when the primer when on it was " Oh are you painting it grey then", I have now told them I am waiting for the pink spotted paint to arrive.
