I know this has been covered many times but ask what checks/how to do can be made without removing any parts.
This what I have found and corrected so far. Loose/worn parts.
OFFSIDE
Eye bolt
Rack U clamp
NEARSIDE
Track rod end (now replaced)
Front wheel bearing (taper so adjusted)
Front shock absorber (mounting to body)
Front ARB (mounting/bolt through chassis)
Things have improved but not enough.

Re: Clonks and rattles from under the car
Can you describe the clonks and rattles in more detail? Basically any suspension component and the exhaust can all cause noise. Make sure that it's not something loose in the boot - won't usally affect handling (unless it's very heavy), but will make a noise!
Re: Clonks and rattles from under the car
Not the exhaust or tools in boot. Sounds as if from under the floor. Worst when NS front wheel hits a rough surface/pothole but often no noise at all. always

Have you checked the N/S joint at the outer end of the rack. The joint comprises a shimmed knuckle and wear can loosen the joint to the point it make a rattle/clunk when passing over rough surfaces.
Re: Clonks and rattles from under the car
Is it possible to feel any play at that joint at the end of the rack. Is it the joint insider the gaiter. Can sometimes here a slight rattle when almost coming to a standstill.

Yes to play at the end of the rack.
Yes the joint is inside the gaiter.

Re: Clonks and rattles from under the car
Jacked up under the suspension on the near side and when I move the the road wheel side to side I can here what sounds like a faint metallic click. It looks to be the tie rod inner joint unless the new track rod end is defective. Cannot detect any free play in either joint and there is nothing of concern when waggling the steering wheel as the road wheels move straight away.
I read the tie rod is part ACA 6018 but cannot find any stock. Do not want to replace the rack if it can be avoided. Is it something that can be left and live with the rattle, or is it going to wear more in a short time and become dangerous.

Re: Clonks and rattles from under the car
The tie rod joint at the outer end of the rack is adjustable by the removal or insertion of shims.
I doubt that you will need to replace the tie rod itself.
