Footman James young drivers scheme
Hi, I’ve been a Morris minor owner for the past year now since I passed my test last June! It’s been happily insured with footman James for the last year but the other day I got a phone call saying it couldn’t be renewed next month as it was my only vehicle and that I need an everyday vehicle insurance policy as-well. Had a look through the forum and saw something similar but that was 12 or so years ago. Has anyone else had any issues with renewing their young driver policy? I’m hoping it’s just a ‘glitch’ because I’m not sure I can afford to buy and insure another car just to drive my moggy! Especially when insurers want 3k plus to insure a bog standard Citroen c1! Thanks! Jake

The one downside of FJ I've experienced is different telephone operators give different information about renewals.
As an example I received a renewal which was well over double the year before.
After contacting them I was told that my previous years quote had been in error and that this was the lowest they could give me.
So, I started getting quotes from other companies.
After a week FJ contacted me to ask if I'd be renewing. I explained that I wouldn't be because of the increase, this operator said they'd look into it and get back to me.
An hour or so later they rang back to apologise, the original renewal price had not included the club discount, now added (and also, as with you, the car is the main vehicle) it was now less cost than the year before and I renewed with FJ (and have done ever since).
However, it did increase drmatically after passing my test as I was no longer a supervised driver, and only came down again once I turned 30.
Since FJ themselves have talked about the members club scheme over the phone with me in the past, it may be wise to phone them, explain your concerns, and ask that they check the renewal included your being a member of the MMOC.

Re: Footman James young drivers scheme
Its not just FJ Young Drivers Scheme that is coming up with this absolute nonsense.
I have been with RH insurance for several years now and last time I rang them to renew they asked me a load of questions, including about "my other car". When I said I had no other car the person I spoke to said it could be a problem (despite them having insured me for the previous five years under exactly the same circumstances). They asked me how I got about if I had no other car, which I though ridiculous. I can't see any logic in this 'other car' stipulation, especially as the car is on a 5K annual mileage limit. I replied that I walked, cycled, took trains and buses and - AND used my car, as that is what cars are for! He said he had to check with a 'supervisor' and would get back to me. He never did, so the next day I rang them up, spoke to someone different and they re-insured me with any silly questions about other cars.
I am wondering if it will be a problem next time. Insurance has now become another scam.
I think the club should be looking into this as it is pointless and absolutely absurd, especially as the club have some kind of agreement with FJ.

Levitation!

Since these days I have two cars on the one policy, I suppose they have to accept that either both are the main car, or neither are.

Thanks for the reply! Just spoken with them again and asked for more details and they’ve said that even with the mmoc scheme taken into account they still can’t insure it as an only vehicle. So I think it must be a new thing unfortunately!

Did they not give any reasons for this "new thing"?
If they remain intractable you will have to check out other insurers - but I suggest that you ask the MMOC to look into it as well seeing as it has "an exclusive car insurance scheme with FJ". There is no logic behind this decision at all, especially if the car is insured for a limited annual mileage.

Someone from the MMOC admins is on the case I believe! I'll let you know any info I find out. Apparently FJ has sent a pack of info out by post so I'll see what that says when I get it. There doesn't seem to be much logic with most things insurance, or if it is its far fetched! I would have thought the 3k mileage limit would be enough to prove i'm not going to be using it as a daily beater.
