...mildly irritating whining

Post by guydenning »

...and before anybody says anything I don't mean me. I've been a bit of a busy bunny lately and haven't been able to get on here... and I didn't get to the Pride parade, or the national rally, or the last local meeting. I need to sort my life out I do - anyway (by the way Fifi's got here MOT now) after the car's well warmed there seems to be a high pitched whine that drops when the clutch is applied. It increases with the engine revery... and only appears on longer journeys... mmm. Answers on a digital postcard please. Usual rules...
First prize - a trip in my latest aquisition - a 1982 Jawa 350 combination in Eastern Bloc combat colours...

ooh I know Kate's gonna be jealous

It might be the carbon thrust bearing in light contact. Have you got a connected clutch return spring?

the spring's okay - and it only happens when warmed up. Perhaps there's some scope for better adjustment. Best have a dig and a fiddle tonight hadn't I!

Yes, make sure it's not adjusted so that there is no 'play' or it will hold the thrust bearing in contact.

Sorry to have missed you at the national :( Perhaps we'll get chance to meet up at the website rally?

Don't worry mate! It seems the clutch itself is working fine, it's probably just adjustment...

Does it drop with the engine cause you put your foot on the clutch or just when you put the clutch in?

Anyway - m'dear - we should get together for a pint some time :) - And Andrew - don't fret :)

Is it a pedal trike or engine powered? Stupid question, but I couldn't make it out. If it's pedal powered, you'll need to sus what the frame is made from before welding - I think they're (were when I knew bicycles...) usually brazed with lugs at the joints, and quite often these days they aren't steel (as I'm certain you already know...) Good luck anyhow - and if you want to have a go with my big (working!) welder, shout!

PS You'll also need to do some research re. wheels - standard bike wheels aren't designed to take transverse forces, and could crumple when cornering. Advice used to be to use tandem wheels fo some extra strength, bur one can get solid/disc wheels these days, eg BMX style ones.

Is it a pedal trike or engine powered?

It's a hybrid electric/pedal trike. If I can make it work.

Cheers for the advice there, I'd not thought about the forces on the wheels. Meh. We'll have to see how we go with this, I've never done anything like it before, but 100+ quid for a ratty second hand ordinary trike, seems a bit pricy.

A pleasure - all those boyhood dreams of bike building weren't a waste of time then... :D

PS Just to keep it within the remit of this board, I, of course, recommend using Minor wheels :-?
PPS ...and Wolseley drum brakes, obviously...
