First time I did a repair on a door handle return spring I used a hammer & punch to fold the metal at the sides of the groove to hold the spring in place. I then cut a small metal place & used resin glue to attach the plate over the groove to help stop the spring slipping out over time.
The repair lasted a few years, until the handle started to semi flop. So I dismantled & found the spring still ok, but the plate had moved/come un-stuck.
It took me a while to find the right size screw & I then drilled & tapped a small hole next to the groove on the door handle, drilled another hole in a freshly cut metal plate & screwed it in place. I feel this will be a lot more solid than using glue.
