Wiper Motor plastic guide
Hello Folks,
Back in November 2018, I bought 2 replacement plastic cable guides that fit into the CRT wiper motor, from Charles Ware (long gone now).
Their part number (and a lot of these part numbers were common across all the suppliers, except Moss Europe) was WPR125.
ESM don't have it and I also gave them a quick phone call (just in case).
Does anyone know who made these guides for Charles Ware, or if anyone else is sourcing them?
Thanks in advance,
George.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
Now, that is a very good question. It is tubular with a "knuckle" at one end that fits inside the CRT motor case.
I didn't think I fitted both the ones I bought but, as I cannot find the 2nd one, maybe I did fit it, which means I can't take a photo.
I'll go through my archive of digital images to see if I had photographed the original "restoration on the 1955 saloon.
George.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
OK, I have now found some photographs. The next pics are from the Series II 4-door
First a broken example Next, one that was fitted to the Series II repaired motor (but taken off another motor) Then we have the original coupling "tube" as found on my Series MM low-light Flexibility achieved by having a "spring" fitting, like on a shower fitting.
Then the fitted Charles Ware's offering George.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
Ok I get it now. Is it a Lucas DR2 or a DR3? It’s the ferrule and flare nut you want.
See: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163502398029 (which is for a DR3)
Stephen
Edit: I see the CRT looks different……
There is a chap who sells wiper motor parts on eBay called Steve Hunt. Maybe he can help.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
Thanks Stepeen,
But that is not it - the motor is a Lucas CRT one as fitted to the Split-screen cars and also to some other British models.
The flexible connection is a one-piece affair, with a round collar at the wiper box end and a "U" shaped one that goes inside the motor casing (as in the pictures).
Regards, George.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
Fair enough. I don't really see what that plastic piece achieves because the outer part of the rack cable is not held by it like with the later arrangement on the DR2/DR3A type wiper motors.
The CRT type was used in the Triumph TR2, MGF amongst others but none of the suppliers that lists parts for the CRT motors show this part in their diagrams.
You could give Richard from Minor Parts of Oxford a ring and see if he knows?

Thanks for the pics
It is the part I thought you meant...I plan to make one or two as spares for my wiper either in Acetal or Delrin over the winter...should be relatively simple to machine up on the lathe...If I end up with any spares I will let you know..

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
I am not familiar with that motor, but is that really how the plastic guide should fit? I looks as though it should be much further into the motor body so that the expanded part on the left fits where you have the right hand one, and the tube fits fully into the motor body. An unsupported piece of plastic is unlikely to have the strength required, hence it breaking. I can't quite see through the grease whether there is a recess in the body to take the inner end if you do move it. As others have written, I can't see what holds the outer tube of the rack in place.
If you have a good one available, then make an accurate dimensioned drawing and it should be simple to turn on a lathe, or scan and make 3D printing. Have a word with Bryan Gostling and see if he knows where to get them ready made.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
Hello Simmitc,
The flattened off part does fit in the first recess of the wiper motor, the round end then fits into a recess on the first wiper wheel housing point.
Image with housing plate removed below This is an image of one of my other motors that had been fitted with a plastic guide, years before, by a previous owner.
The Series MM (and Series II) wiper motors are fitted just to the right of the right-hand glove-box or the Seriess MM instrument cluster, behind the metal dash board and very awkward to get at. George.

Ah I see. On the later cars the rack cable would be in a Bundy tube where it is clamped by the wiper wheel box.

Re: Wiper Motor plastic guide
Stephen,
Also on later cars it is easily accessible as its on a bracket near the near-side hydraulic suspension damper, if I remember correctly.
Haven't had a "later" car for a number of decades now - Series III onward fitting location below (picture taken from an eBay advert) So my memory was correct

Yes indeed. I have had the dubious pleasure of overhauling my entire wiper system!gtt1951 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 1:27 pm Stephen,

Hi George, thanks for the photo, explains everything. I was aware if the mounting position, but have not worked on the system per sae. No wonder it was changed! Good luck with finding or making the part. I think that it is definitely worth contacting Bryan to see what he might have available.
