The easy-out advice was bad - very bad !!
I hope that's not directed at my previous post because I certainly did NOT specifically or directly advise the use of Easyouts and the general information was given in good faith and from personal experience!
Using the easyout was MY decision because I did not want to take the head off (lack of experience).
Anyway, the head is now off and I'm going to take it to a pal with the idea of perhaps welding a stud in place where the corner of the head (thermo housing)has split.
Eveyone keeps mentioning cheap heads - would these be suitable for running on unleaded petrol? Also, how can you tell if a head has been converted? I was assured mine was when I bought the car, and have no reason to doubt it. But now the head is off what do I look for? I was expecting to see new inserts where the valves meet the head can't make any out.
Simmitc - I have bought a car manual and yes, there's no substitute for words and diagrams.

Idris.
1) I'm told (BigGinger) that the odd symbols are ...
Oh, read it from himself - he's just posted it.
2) I would have expected that the seat inserts were visible. You will probably find a s/hand leaded head uch cheaper than a new unleaded one. I would assume that any head are only for leaded (or valve additive) unless it is guanteed otherwise...
3) I hope you're old head can be fixed - at least you know that one.
Well, just ordered a head gasket set and some other bits from ESM.
Bigginger was right about the pop-up.
thanks to all for responding to my messages,
Idris
iddy - if you're "into" fleabay then also have a look for the Minor workshop manual on c.d. They're usually in the Morris parts section.
Kevin recommended these originally (I think) and a few on here have bought one. About £3 and it's just a matter of finding the relevant section and printing off the page to use. Saves buying the book and getting that covered in oil or damaged.
Well iddy at least your are learning even if it is a bit of "the hard way"
And a useful point if you want to prevent rust in the engine bay just forget to put the dipstick back in place and you will get a lovely oil coated surface.
Cheers
Kevin

AH joy of joys. The guys in work broke of the cracked end of head and brazed a large lump in it's place, they then drilled and tapped a new hole.
When the gasket set arrives I'll attempt to put it all back together.
They did point out that the intake valves were very very light in colour which seems to mean the engine mixture is too lean. I'll check out the manual about carb adjustment.
I've also bought the cd/manual that was suggested.
