Series 11 - 803 Sump

Post by HarryMango »

Hi there

A fellow leics member is after an 803cc sump for his Series 11 Traveller rebuild & has it on good authority that this is different to the later sumps -but no one seems to know what the difference is - any thoughts.

I would have thought it was just the same ! But can the old sump not be re-used ?

Yes I thought it was the same - he is building up an incomplete engine so dosent have the original sump but is assured that it is different ?

Well, perhaps the seal arrangement is different like on the small and large block A-series.

The 1098 sump fits a 1275, but the front and back seal housings are smaller which allows for more 'podging' of the seal sideways and less pressure than if it was kept vertical by the larger (taller) seal housings on the 1275.

Would be interesting to compare an 803 sump to a 1098 and 1275. I bet they would all fit but with different sealing results!

Please let the guy, if he is restoring the engine that was originally in there, let him! I wouldn't mind getting my original engine in there, even if that means going down 300cc.

Don't be daft, of course it is! Not everyone wants power you know. Originality is preferred by some folks.

Thanks for replies. If I get time over the weekend I will dig out my spare 803 engine & compare the sump sealing arangement with a later one (if I can find it in the dark recesses of my garage).

My mate John who has the S11 traveller is a meticulous person & wants everything to be correct as built - he already has a superb late 1098 Trav in his fleet.

I too wouldnt entertain putting a bigger engine in my S11 - in fact I have recently taken off all my later bits & returned it to original 1953 spec. - each to their own.
