As promised, here's an update on the problem. Tilly is now back from my local "magician's workshop" with a very sore smacked bottom! It turned out that it was the electronic ignition module that was causing the problem (Lumenition). Having bought the car from Charles Ware in October 2021, and waited for delivery until April 2022, as a fully restored car, I felt that she should have been a bit better behaved. However, as we all now know, Wares basically went to the wall in November 2021 and I was in one way, fortunate to get her but, in another way unfortunate to have her messed with by Saab, not Morris, trained mechanics.
On removal of the dizzy cap it looked fine but, on closer inspection, it became apparent that the rotor arm was just held on by rust and that there was a rubber horseshoe grommet missing which should have kept out the moisture. The wiring to the module was kinked and frayed and the module itself was not working. So much for quality control!!
That all being said Tilly is now home and running like she should be, just ready for a Show in Inverness on 20th May. Oh the joys of Moggy ownership - don't we all love it!

Or just bad installation 🤔 which from the owners post is most likely.

Didn't the OP mention wrongly trained mechanics?

Agreed, although you'd think a Saab trained technician would understand electronic ignition. And any 'technician' worth their salt would hardly leave the OP's car in the state that he described - "the rotor arm was just held on by rust and that there was a rubber horseshoe grommet missing which should have kept out the moisture. The wiring to the module was kinked and frayed and the module itself was not working." But I guess we'll never know now.... :-?

It sounds more like the distributor was never looked at by Ware. Probably a bad DIY installation from way back.

But that's the point the OP states purchased as a fully reconditioned car, so no excuse for poor quality workmanship from a dealer. It's not a fit repair. If the dealer was still around personally I'd be having words but at least he has found someone to put it right.

Lumentation is one of the better systems, if installed properly they last well (I have on in one of my cars that I haven't touched in 30 years). Shorted out wiring will destroy the module though. As with pretty much anything you can always break it if you try hard enough!
