Do you have a smooth case gearbox fitted? The starter ring on a 1098 engine foul if fitted to a smooth case box.

You've not said what engine or gearbox, so I'll ask the question....
Is it the same engine size as came out?

Could be Engine/Mounting Plate/Gearbox combination incompatible?

I think it was a 998 engine that came out and this is a 1098 going in...does this have a bigger clutch cover? The gesr box is the smooth kind

A 1098 engine flywheel will lock up on a smooth case gearbox because the teeth on the starter ring touch the inside of the gearbox casing. The later ribbed case gearbox has more clearance and is fine. The clutch won't be causing the problem you're having.
