insurance for modified engine

Hi there. Yesturday i contacted my insurance company,Aon, to find out how my premiums would change for a very slightly modified engine. I expected them to say no change at all as other people have experienced or maybe a very slight increase. I have already fitted a HIF 1.5 inch SU with water heated inlet manifold. They quoted me for having the carburettor change would add an extra 25% onto my premium??!!
Now they didnt seem they technically knowledgeable and asked me how much HP it would add, i said 2-5 extra as a guess, and said that it was off a bog standard metro, without any queries of the type and compacity of the unit. Are they wrong or have i not provided the correct info about the mod. What have other people said when notifying there insurance company. They also said that if it was off a mg metro that they would not cover it???!!! I understand that come mg metros were fitted with such a unit??
Another puzzling thing they told me was that if i was to do the mod my self (which i have) i was would to get it certified my an engineer. Is this correct or is this b-s??
Any help and experiences with dealing with the insurance company would be great. was thinking of fitting a 1275cc cylinder head but not sure now!!

Yes it's not unusual. You have to remember that you have some pretty stoopid people out there who want to modify their cars. It's not good business on the part of the insurers to guess who's good and who isn't. An engineers report is the only sure way to establish if it's safe.

Also most insurance companies like to have Brakes and Suspension Mods done 1st and the performance bits done last, if you are running standard brakes that wont help your argument.
