Pull starter

My pull starter has stopped working so I guess it's the solenoid as the pin still works. What's the best way to change it

If it is the starter solenoid then there is only one way: Disconnect the battery lead (from the battery and then the solenoid) and the lead to the starter motor by undoing the two nuts (1 & 2) on the front and removing them. The solenoid itself is held in place by a nut (3), which with the solenoid in place, is found behind the dash.
Before you undo this you must undo and release the cable from the pull starter knob itself, which is connected to the solenoid via a joiner / coupler (5) attached to the pin at the rear of the solenoid (4).
Once you've released the cable and undone the nut behind the dash that secures the solenoid to the bulkhead the solenoid simply pulls through and off.
Installation is the reversal of the above, making sure you reconnect the battery cable last.
Not a complex job at all but it can be quite fiddly behind the dash and will require some patience.

If it still starts when you depress the pin in the engine bay, it must be working correctly and the issue lies with the pull cable, which sounds like it needs adjusting. On these pull start cars it’s not actually a solenoid, just a heavy duty switch, which you have already proved to be working. So adjust the pull cable.

Yes, it is entirely possible that the cable is not functioning properly if you can start it by depressing the pin. I once had a similar problem and, on investigation, I noticed the nut that secures the switch was a bit loose. It took a couple of turns to make it nice and snug and the pull start was fine from then on.......
