Engine block

Hi there, for my sins I’ve bought a little Healey Sprite to run along side the moggy once it’s finished, can someone tell me please the difference between a 1098 cylinder block and a 1275 block just by looking or numbers please, the block in this sprite is suppost to be a 1098 but I have doubts. If it is a 1275 with the correct head then the two screws that hold the heater outlet connection in place will be at an angle to the head where the 1098 fixings are in a straight line across.

On another thought then, what is the difference between the two gearboxes the sprite and the moggy both are ribbed on the outside anything to show on the outside.Thanks

The 1275cc cylinder head can be fitted to the 1098cc engine block so the head cannot be trusted to be the main identifier of the engine block.
The engine number of the 1098cc engine is prefixed by a 10. The 1275cc engine is prefixed by a 12.
The main difference between the 1098cc engine block and the 1275cc engine block is that the 1275cc does not have the two cam follower access covers. The 1275cc engine block is solid under the manifolds. To remove the 1275cc cam followers you have to remove the camshaft.
The 1275cc MG Midget/Sprite gearbox has a reverse light switch by the bottom of the gear lever. The 1098cc gearbox does not have the switch.
