They can be interchanged but are not the same internally

The gear ratios are different.
The overall dimensions are the same so the gearbox will fit. The clutch release arm will have to be changed as the Sprite/MG has a hydraulic release mechanism.

I enjoy the closer ratios of a smooth case Spridget box with a 948 and 4.55. You may find the same with a 1098 and a 4.22. The gap between 2nd and 3rd is much reduced. The Minor 1st is usually too low anyway.
