Hi all,
Having pulled my shoulder muscles on more than one occasion reaching under the dash to fumble around amidst the wires for the bonnet pull rod, I've decided to replace the rod with a cable and dash knob from an MG. Has anyone carried out this conversion?
I would’ve thought that the easiest procedure would be lengthening the existing rod. As the return spring acts on it which is essential. Maybe search for a longer rod from a Morris Oxford or Six.
My frugal Yankee ways tell me to put an extension on the ring under the dash.
A sturdy metal coathanger. Cut away the curved sides which form the hook. Form a circle at each end of the straight length. Snap one circle into the original release ring; use the other circle to pull the release. The pull circle is now much closer to the driver, and doesn't require stretching/reaching under the dash.
I made an extension from a length of 3mm welding wire, about a foot long with a hoop at each end. Works fine and allows the radio to be sited under the metal dash on the right hand side of the steering wheel. The pull now rests freely on the parcel shelf in easy reach.

Excellent improvement! Exactly what I had in mind.
