Any ideas what this connection is?

Post by daveejhitchins »

I noticed this when I had Ruby delivered on a flatbed from my son - Didn't think much about it as there was no connection to it. Now I've replaced the oil filter assembly with a screw-on upgrade - I'm just curious? As mentioned there was no wire laying around (disconnected) so my thoughts were maybe oil pressure???

That connection is to the blocked filter indicator switch which fed back to a warning light in the speedo.
Not all Minors were so fitted, and the fitment did not last long.

That makes sense - curiosity quenched - many thanks . . . Dave H.

A few years ago I collected my Traveller from the South coast . The journey home was 500 miles + .
I only stopped for fuel and when almost home a warning light came on , investigating all was well except my oil was very hot .
The warning light was controlled by the terminal on the oil filter housing . the filter was not blocked and I assume that it was a warning of high oil temperature .
I no longer have this as I now have spin off filter fitted .

There never has been an oil temp sensor on the 'A' Series.
The switch involved would only come on if the oil filter is blocked which would result in lack of oil circulation causing the oil temp to rise.

Out of interest, did you re-use the original studs from the engine block to oil filter assembly, or use the new ones that came with the screw-on upgrade?

The original oil filter head studs holding the Mini type of screw on filter head to the block are not suitable unless you use the MG Metro/MG Midget type screw on filter head as pictured below.

I used the new ones - totally different length!
