what problems (if any) will i encounter with the car being negative earth,

Hello Richard,
there should be no problems at all. It is worth checking that the coil polarity has been reversed though, as the ignition system is polarity conscious, but the car will still run if incorrect. the negative (marked -) should be connected to the distributor (white\black) wire. If you have a coil marked cb and sw then the sw should be connected to the distributor (Normally on a positive earth car the sw is connected to the live supply)

The other thing that needs to be checked is the battery clamp. If the battery is turned around the terminals are close to the metal clamp....
You really don't want to short the battery termonals with the clamping bar!
oh yes - if you have a radio fitted (+ve earth) then it will need to be changed
