Paraffin gun for Waxoyl? Draper kit any good?

Post by Oldmogman »

Has anyone used a paraffin gun to apply Waxoyl and, if so, how successful was it?

I'm looking at Toolstation's kit of tools for an air compressor and wondering how useful the various bits are. I really only need a hose, tyre inflator and blowgun at the moment but it works out cheaper to buy a complete kit that also includes the paraffin gun and spray gun.

That said, you tend to get what you pay for these days (although I've found Draper tools to be good quality, especially its Expert range), so I wonder if I'm better off buying better quality tools piecemeal when I need them?

Has anyone had any experience of this kit?

I'd have thought that a shutz underseal gun was more suitable?

I bought a similar kit but without the paint spray gun from Machine Mart and it has all worked well over many years.

If you want to spray Waxoyl with the paraffin gun you do need to thin it down with white spirit. The white spirit will evaporate away leaving the Waxoyl. Because of the thinning of the Waxoyl you may need to apply more than one coat.
Having the Waxoyl thinned does mean that the Waxoyl get into areas that unthinned Waxoyl may not.

Thanks Phil - yes, I usuall thin Waxoyl with white spirit as well as heating it, but was worried the paraffin gun might clog!

Think I'll give the Draper kit a go.
