Paging engine i.d. experts
Would anyone like to tell me about my engine?
It is obviously rebuilt because it is painted green.
But what is it?
The engine number is not much help, see atached photo.
So what do I have? It is in a 6cwt van 1970, so presumably should be a 1098. What can I look for to confirm this?

Re: Paging engine i.d. experts
The block casting number - not the engine capacity is cast into the block.
From the casting number the original size of the engine can be determined.
The 1098cc engine has a stamped plate attached at the N/S front of the block which has 1100 stamped on it.

If you remove a spark plug and bring the piston up you will be able to see if it is Low or High compression.

Would that be the missing plate as per my photo?philthehill wrote: ↑Sat Feb 26, 2022 8:56 am The block casting number - not the engine capacity is cast into the block.

No.
The missing plate in your photo is the engine number plate.
The plate being referred to is on the N/S of the engine below the inlet/exhaust manifold.
You can see the 1100 plate fitted to the N/S of the engine just behind the front engine plate & which is for sale on 'e' bay

Re: Paging engine i.d. experts
That is the plate being referred to so confirming that you have a 1098cc engine fitted. Whether the engine is high or low compression can only be determined as the engine No: plate has been removed is by removing the head and measuring the dish in the pistons. I suspect that as the engine appears to have been re-bored it has been fitted with standard H/C compression pistons.
You may have a GT souped-up version of the 1098cc but you do need to get that engine mount changed as it is de-laminating from the metal mounting plates. Check the other engine mount for de-laminating. I would replace the engine mounts as a pair.

Re: Paging engine i.d. experts
Well spotted and good point.
It looks as though I will be going down the new chassis route, but the engine mounts might not wait that long.
I may already have some; I have a funny feeling that I use MM ones to reclaim Riley engine mounts.
If not, they will form part of my bid to become a major shareholder in ESM. I must say that I have found ESM to be excellent both in speed of delivery, price of spares, and occasional helpfulness whn required.
Meanwhile, I will do some preparatory WD40ing.
