MG gearbox internals

Post by beautgrainger147 »

Hello,
I've heard that the standard gearbox internals in the morris can be replaced with parts from (I think, remembering) an MG.
if so then what work would need to be done? - this would be for a 1098 - would the differential need changing?
I think I've read a bit about entire gearboxes being replaced but wondered if the original housing could be kept.

Why not just replace the 1098 box with the 1275 midget one - they look the same...

where to break down next?
2013... managed to seize my 1275 just by driving it round the block :(

mmm, well I was just tempted by the idea of keeping the original box so it just fits straight in, if it's not worth it I might just end up putting in a standard one.

well - I've been informed many times that the 1098 and the Midget 1275 box are very similar and have the same casings 9I've never had 1 next to the other to make a closer check).
I bought the gearbox rebuild parts from an MG centre as they were cheaper for the same parts but there are a few differences somewhere as the 1275 is meant to be slightly more robust. I'm told that the 1275 box has a few needle rollers in plce of plain bearings but where these are is something I never worked out.

Hi,
I had a 1275 midget gearbox and it was exactly the same in terms of fitting and dimensions - no mods required that I can remember. The only mod I can remember making was when I fitted a 1300cc engine and had to drill out the top locator hole.

The problem you will have is finding one and it will probably be worn and require a rebuild.

Regards,
Wal
