re wiring colours.
There is a pattern to them.
For example, Purple is a fused permanent Live.
It goes to the Interior light (if fitted) and to the Horn.
Both of these have the switch after the equipment, rather than before it.
So Purple with Black trace, is a 'switched Earth', i.e. it is a live looking for a switch.

But there is no way to confirm just by looking, if the Purple/Black is the for the Horn or the interior light switches.

What I don't understand, perhaps John can help here, is why your indicator stalk has the Black/Brown and it's connected to the Purple/Black.

But he's not got a horn button on the stalk, so why is it there?

Berni, Although the Brown/Black is on the Stalk assembly it is used for the Horn earth return.
It goes to a brush on the insulated slip ring of the steering column, from there up the centre of the column to a plastic insulator and spring to make contact with the Horn Push in the middle of the steering wheel to complete the return to earth when pressed.

The Tell-Tale goes direct to the bulb via the light green wire.

Right, now I get it.
Though I do wonder why it is Brown/Black, rather than Purple/Black.... :roll:

Coincidentally, I've been trying to check it out online and a short while ago I found this NZ site

Which says:
Note: The original switches had 5 wires, which meant the earth had to travel to the switch via the steering column, after a period this can cause problems due to poor earth and higher resistance from this route, so this switch allows the earth to be made directly via the switch wiring.
That didn't explain it really, since it's not an earth for anything on the stalk, it's for the horn.
I'm quite happy with my SII slip ring.... :)

The wire in the background is a single colour Purple and is the supply for the interior light.
On the original loom the fuse box has two Purple wires, a thick one goes down to the Horn and a thinner one goes behind the dash for the interior light.

The Purple/Black is correctly wired in your photos.

Ah, sorry - it looked like a matching purple/black, as it's partially obscured by the other wires in front of it. :oops: Quite difficult to fathom out other people's wiring, unless the car is in front of you and you happen to have a multimeter to hand...

Quick update , have worked on the van today, checked the wiring to the flasher unit and all was exactly as per Johns recommendation, so its not the wiring. Then I replaced the flasher unit with another new one and ......... bingo! Turned out that the fault was caused by a faulty flasher unit which bizarrely was new 3 years ago when fitted. As the fault has been like that for 3 years and was how I had the van returned to me once the new loom had been fitted it suggests the new flasher unit was faulty at purchase! Thanks to all of you for your help! Indicator light now stays off and only flashes when indicator is in operation!
