Off rear hub seal leaking: Part 2.

Post by Flywheel »

I have at last found the time to work on my traveller with a leaking off rear hub seal. I do have a few more questions though, and I'd be grateful for any help anyone can give me please.

1. After jacking the car up and withdrawing the half shaft, and removing the brake drum I found that the hub has a lot of motion forward and backwards. Must have been a 1/4 of an inch or so.

I hadn't knocked back the tab washer, nor loosend the hub nut. My question is, is this amount of movement normal on a rear hub? It did seem odd to have all that movement there, although the bearing was undamaged.

2. After removing the hub, I could see that the hub seal wasn't fitting right at the base of the hub. There was also a gap there, of more than a 1/4 of an inch. Surely the seal is meant to locate fully, in the hub, or am I incorrect to assume that's how it should be fitted?

3. I have decided to purchase the ESM kit with seal, new bearing, 'large O ring' and half shaft gasket. Although looking at their Web page for the bearing kit, they also show various shims. So should the rear hub require shimming? I can find no mention of this in the workshop manuals.

4. Lastly, I do understand that the bearing is fitted into the hub, and then the completed hub is refitted back onto the axle. However does the bearing fit snugly right up against the shoulder on the axle tube? I believe that 'Phil the Hill' mentioned that the bearing should be fitted fully home, is that correct?

Thanks Jonnie.👍

To answer your questions.
1. The bearing should not move inside the the hub. This movement is an indicator of a worn hub. The bearing should be a reasonably tight fit in the hub.

2. The hub seal should be fitted fully home in the hub and the right way round.

3. There are no shims in the hub.

The shims in the link are to do with setting the diff.

Your hub must have the groove for the 'O' ring. You cannot fit the 'O' ring without the groove being in place.

4. The bearing should protrude beyond the outer face of the hub and paper gasket by 0.001" to 0.004" when the bearing is fitted fully home. This ensures that the hub bearing is correctly gripped between hub flange and half shaft flange. This measurement can be achieved by using different thickness of hub flange gasket. It should be noted that not all paper hub gaskets are the same thickness. Thickness is dependent upon supplier and then not all are the same thickness. To overcome the thickness problem make your own gaskets from the correct thickness of gasket paper which is readily available from 'e' bay.

See BMC wksp man section HH.2. for details.

Hi Phil, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Like yourself I'm retired, and I'm enjoying my first Morris Minor, although I cannot claim to be an engineer I just enjoy motors of all sorts as well as driving them.

It's great to know that Morris vehicles have a good following, with many people willing to share their tips of the trade.

Thanks again. Jonnie.👍
