Non handed hub nuts

Post by cdg »

Hi This is my first position so if I get things wrong, sorry.

The renovation of my 1955 car started just after Christmas but with the present conditions has become far more extensive, I won't be using it for some time. My first problem was that there was no dedicated groove for the "O ring on the rear wheel hub, but that has been kindly answered already, many thanks. My next query is that the hub nuts are not handed. I was so surprised that I took off the side I had finished to check, and had to order another paper gasket as a result. Is this right? Well, it is right but why? I had an MG in the 60s and the spinners were definitely handed.

Thanks

David

Only from car No: 376869 (Com number on bulkhead) was the L/H rear hub fitted with a left handed threaded hub nut.

Because the forces acting on a splined hub are different to those acting on a hub nut the spinner(s) (that includes non eared spinners) on the nearside always need to have a left handed thread so that the forces acting on the spinner are always trying to tighten the spinner.

It is better if the L/H rear hub is fitted with a L/H thread but it is not an absolute requirement as is the case with splined hubs and spinners.

Therefore do not reverse everywhere otherwise the spinner will undo.
