I am not sure exactly what you are doing but there are three parts to the gearbox case.
The first is the big bit with all of the gears in it.
The second is the extension bit that bolts on to the back of the big bit.
The third is the little bit that sits on top of the extension and has the gear lever fitted to it.

Start with the big bit and make sure that it is in neutral so that no gears are engaged and the gaps in the three selector rods all line up.
Next fit the extension bit on its own. Looking at the gearbox from the rear you will probably need to rotate the extension anticlockwise slightly to fit the 'pin' into the selector rods gap and then rotate it slightly clockwise to get it into the right position to bolt it onto the big bit.
Then fit the little bit onto the top of the extension making sure that the pin in the little bit is aligned above the socket on the extension before you drop it down and bolt it on.

definately use engine oil - not EP80 or EP90!

If you are having difficulty getting the pin to fit in the selector rods gap try waggling the pin about by means of the socket in the top of the extension piece.
